AI app builder costs: the buying learning path

Compare development usage, hosting, database costs, code access, and migration work without confusing tokens, credits, or headline prices.

Answer in brief

Price the accepted application and its operating model, not one prompt. Check source access, data exports, limits, and recurring services before purchasing.

01

Separate the two budgets

The first budget pays for creating and correcting the application. The second pays for operating it. They can include different resources and providers. A trial may consume generation credits while a live service consumes compute, database calls, storage, email, or external AI requests. Record the workload behind any estimate.

Credits and tokens are not a common currency across vendors. This reference has not performed a like-for-like cost experiment and does not name a cheapest builder. Follow the vendor's current terms and keep the dated quote that applies to your selected plan.

02

Budget for the handoff

Find out whether source export or Git integration is included in the intended plan. Macaly documents paid ZIP export and excludes GitHub integration from Starter. Lovable and Bolt publish code-ownership statements, but legal rights, file access, and a reproducible deployment are separate questions. The ownership guide explains how to test all three.

An exit plan should include data, assets, authentication, secrets, and external dependencies. Ask another person to run a non-production copy from written instructions. If that cannot be done, record the dependency rather than labeling the application portable. Maintenance time is part of cost even when no invoice labels it that way.
